Electricity Market ABC The purpose of liberalising the electricity market is to promote competition at as many stages of electricity supply as possible. However, due to technical and economic reasons, competition is not possible at each link of the electricity supply chain; therefore, some functions remain regulated even after the electricity market is opened.
Once the market is liberalised, competition takes place in electricity production and electricity trade, whereas the functions related to network infrastructure or system services remain monopolistic and thus unregulated. Liberalisation of the electricity market does not mean that parallel electricity networks can be built; consequently, clients will not be able to change their system operators.
